What is the WEST Alliance?

The WEST (Water, Energy, Science, and Teaching) Alliance is a partnership between four departments, the Petroleum Industry Career Path program (PICP), the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative (USTAR), the Utah Museum of Natural History, and two Utah school districts to enhance the science communication skills and professional development of graduate students and to promote inquiry based science using the theme of water and energy.  The WEST Alliance will provide graduate students with opportunities to collaborate with faculty and peers from multiple disciplines, industry professionals, K-12 teachers and students.  The WEST Alliance will also provide professional development opportunities for teachers through partnerships with scientists, workshops, retreats and seminars that address content, science-specific pedagogy, and relevance of science to societal issues resulting in enhanced learning and STEM career interest for students in grades 4 through 8.
