RESEARCH INTERESTS
I study geology because I have always been fascinated with the natural world around me and how it came to be. I received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in geology from Brigham Young University where I had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii, the Bahamas, New England, Austria, Italy and Switzerland to study various geologic topics from volcanology to metamorphism to sedimentology. For my master’s research I studied groundwater recharge in the West Desert of Utah. My current doctoral research involves identifying the sources of mercury contamination in the Great Salt Lake watershed and monitoring the transport of the poisonous chemical to the local streams, wetlands, and ultimately the Great Salt Lake itself. By understanding the fate and transport of mercury in the Great Salt Lake watershed, I hope to provide useful information which will allow other scientists and local government leaders to remediate potential environmental problems.
