WEST and Elementary students design wetland for Tracy Aviary
WEST helps school students research and design a remediation project for a local Salt Lake City treasure
WEST Fellows Elliot Wilkinson, Chris Harbison, and Elizabeth Jarrell, teachers Margaret Lane and Penny Stone, and several elementary students are researching how to develop a small wetland at Salt Lake City's Tracy Aviary. The Aviary has kindly handed over the design of the project to WEST and a handful of school students to document the existing resources and make recommendations for remediation of the property. This project is designed to help students become engaged in wetland conversation as they take part throughout the school year in various aspects of restoring a small wetland area that is currently not open to the public. WEST hopes that by allowing them to participate directly in the decision-making process, the project can serve as a mechanism for students to better understand their role in the natural world while also addressing core curriculum requirements. Students will visit the Aviary wetland various times during the year and will be involved in observing the area pre-restoration and collecting scientific data to allow for a comparison of this wetland area to other wetlands in the state. With the help of WEST fellows, teachers, and experts in the field, students will develop their own strategy for conservation that can be eventually implemented at this site. Schools currently involved in the project include Wasatch Elementary, Bennion Elementary, and Beacon Heights Elementary. Click here to access the Tracy Aviary Wetland Restoration Teaching Module.
