Students Visit Ore Deposits of Northern Chile

Inaugural Society of Economic Geologists Foundation Student-dedicated International Field Trip Course lead by Dr. Erich Petersen

Sixteen students, representing eight countries on four continents and fourteen universities visited seven world-class copper deposits in the Antofagasta-Calama region of the Atacama Desert. John Porter (Ph.D. ’09) represented the University of Utah.  Four professional geologists from Chile, Peru and Canada accompanied the group.  Dr. Erich Petersen and colleague Dr. William X. Chávez, Jr. (New Mexico Tech) organized and lead the inaugural international student-dedicated field trip course sponsored by the Society of Economic Geologists Foundation to visit and study the ore deposits of Northern Chile, January 5-13.

The concept of an international student-dedicated field trip course arose as a result of a student initiative at the SEF Conference on Creating Wealth and the Mineral Industry held in Keystone, Colorado in May 2006. SEG members in attendance enthusiastically received the petition, resulting in the establishment of a “student field trip fund” and pledges totaling $30,000 to start a fund. The SEG Foundation will annually support two SEG-organized field trips to major mining districts around the world by providing funding to subsidize student participation on the field trips. Students, regardless of where in the world they are located, are eligible and encouraged to participate on these field trips.

The second international student-dedicated field trip course in May 2006 will focus on Carlin type gold deposits in northern Nevada.  It is also being organized and lead by Drs. Erich U. Petersen and William X. Chávez, Jr.
