2009 – Yellowstone Hotspot Volcanism of the Snake River Plain

Examine volcanism of the world’s premier continental hotspot. In five days we will visit classic localities of rhyolite and basalt volcanism on the Snake River Plain.  Localities include the 2.1 Ma Huckleberry Ridge Tuff from Yellowstone’s largest supereruption; ashflow tuffs from the 4.5–6.6 Ma Heise volcanic center; 2000-year-old basalt at Craters of the Moon National Monument; and voluminous high-temperature rhyolites of the 8–12 Ma Bruneau-Jarbidge volcanic center.
