PETROLEUM GEOLOGY AT THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS

  • College of Mines & Earth Sciences
  • 22 Faculty, 10+ Research Faculty Lecturers
  • $2.6 million annual research awards
  • Constructing new building with state-of-the-art teaching & research facilities. $15 million gift from Marta Weeks, daughter of Frederick A. Sutton.

PETROLEUM INDUSTRY CAREER PATH (PICP)

  • Modular introductory curriculum: 1 credit overview courses in petroleum geology, sedimentary basins, seismic interpretation, well logging, and prospect evaluation (PICP I-V)
  • Advanced courses: seismic and sequence stratigraphy, basin analysis, wave inversion theory, petrophysics, and more.
  • Career seminars and preparation
  • Focus on skill sets: General geoscience skills, career development, and personal skills (including teamwork, organization and time management, leadership, etc.)
  • Integrated research + teaching; real-world datasets.
  • Encourage industry exposure through interviews, internships, seminars, lectures, field trips, and cooperative research projects.
  • Popular initiative with students: strong enrollments from both GEO and GEOPHYS.
